BRUNCH OUT LOUD
When: Saturday, May 11th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.
Where: Tamayo, 1400 Larimer St, Denver, CO 80202
Who: Governor Jared Polis, Rep Carlos Guillermo Smith, The Colorado LGBT Caucus, and YOU!
Fifty years after the Stonewall Riots, our movement has come further than we ever could have known. Following the election of the nation’s first openly gay governor, pro-equality majorities in both chambers, and the second largest delegation of LGBT elected officials in the country, we are closer than ever to passing our two priority bills that will change the lives of LGBTQ Coloradans — it's time to take a moment to celebrate.
Join us on Saturday, May 11th for a legislative brunch celebration as we commemorate this movement, this community, and this great state that we call home.
We'll be joined by Governor Jared Polis — the nation's first openly gay Governor, the Colorado LGBT Caucus, and we're excited to announce our special guest - Florida Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith — the first openly queer Latinx elected to the Florida legislature!
If you have any accessibility needs or dietary restrictions, please email garrettr@one-colorado at least two weeks prior so we can make sure the event will be accessible and comfortable for you.
Featuring bottomless mimosas, delicious brunch treats, and so many special guests - you won't want to miss out!
Carlos Guillermo Smith is a politician and LGBTQ activist from Orlando, Florida. Upon his election to the Florida House of Representatives in 2016, Smith became the first openly queer Latinx person to serve in the legislature where he currently serves and is Chair of the Progressive Caucus.
Smith stepped into the national spotlight after the 2016 Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting, while speaking up for the mostly Latinx and LGBTQ victims and families. He helped organize vigils in the wake of the tragedy, called for statewide LGBTQ non-discrimination laws and assault weapons bans, and helped Equality Florida raise $9.5 million to be disbursed directly to the victims. For his work, he was included in Out Magazine's annual Out 100 as one of the "Survivors and Heroes of Pulse.”
After the 2018 shooting in Parkland that took the lives of seventeen students and teachers, Carlos again led the charge for gun safety in Florida. He has delivered millions of dollars in state funding to PTSD programs for veterans, first responders and mass shooting survivors; and has used his voice to champion sweeping cannabis reform in his state.
Smith is a notable rising star in LGBTQ politics, having been recognized with several national awards for his intersectional work, including the 2018 AIDSWatch Elizabeth Taylor Legislative Leadership Award and the Victory Institute’s 2017 Tammy Baldwin Breakthrough Award.
Your contribution is a non-tax deductible gift to support the organization’s lobbying and advocacy efforts through One Colorado, a 501(c)(4) organization.
